BOARDS AND AUTHORITIES OF BUTTS COUNTY 2009

There are numerous local Boards and Authorities, all of which are an important part of the overall Butts County structure. They are all made up almost exclusively of local Butts Citizens who give of their time to help make the community a better place by serving on these groups, the following definitions are provided below: Authority: A form of local government charged with a specific task of management and oversight, usually with broad discretionary powers. In some cases, an Authority can levy its own tax to help it accomplish the purpose for which it was set up although this is rarely ever done in most counties. Its members are either appointed by local legislators (County Commissioners and City Council Members) or by other means approved by law. An Authority is a legal entity and gets its powers from legislation which is passed into law. Board: A group of persons charged with the governance of a particular agency, function or task with discretionary powers over various managerial functions as defined by a set of by-laws. Board members may be appointed by local legislators, other groups or may be self sustaining. A list of the local boards and authorities will be provided below. Additions will continue to be added.
