| The Butts County Primary races were held on July 15, 2008. All four Constitutional Officers (Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, Probate Judge and Clerk of Court) ran unopposed, as did the Coroner. These individuals will return to office in 2009 for a four year term. Chief Magistrate Judge Gigi Leverette Hoard will face opposition in the November General Election from newcomer Pope Welch and Jim Trimble. Two of the three County Commission races were decided as well. Democratic Incumbent Grover McIntyre was defeated by Democrat Robert Henderson for the District 2 Commission Seat. Since there was no Republican opposition, Mr. Henderson will assume the commission seat in January of 2009. Republican Roger McDaniel faced Republican Jim Freeman for the District 5 Commission Seat being vacated by Commission Chairman Lester Peek. McDaniel defeated Freeman and faces no Democratic opposition so he will assume the commission seat in January of 2009 as well. District 1 was hotly contested by four Republican candidates: Incumbent Gerald Kersey faced challengers Gator Hodges, Tom Eads and Donald Pace. Hodges defeated Kersey as well as the other candidates claiming 67% of the vote and negating a runoff. Hodges was scheduled to face Independent challenger Jim Baker in the November General Election but Baker dropped out of the race two weeks after the primary. Hodges will assume the commissioner seat in January of 2009 with Henderson and McDaniel. For more detailed election results, see the sidebar at left. |
