| The City of Jenkinsburg is located in the northwest section of Butts County, served by Georgia Highway 42, US 23 and the main line of Norfolk Southern Railroad. Because of its proximity to Henry County, Jenkinsburg has experienced 11.7% growth in recent years, making it the fastest growing city in Butts County. It was developed as a railroad town and each day, many trains parade through the downtown area, which is pictured at right. Founded in 1889, Jenkinsburg actually began developing soon after the War between the States. It was named after the William H. Jenkins family who settled here in 1865. is home to LKQ Incorporated, an auto parts salvage company and Hyponex, a division of Scotts that processes tree bark into garden materials. Jenkinsburg also has a post office (middle picture), grocery store, convenience store, car washes and a fitness center. While the 2000 census puts Jenkinsburg's population at 203, recent growth over the past five years has resulted in many new homes built to accomodate people moving from the Atlanta sprawl, such as the one pictured at right, bottom. Downtown Jenkinsburg is a tranquil setting of several small squares of streets. The town boasts historical Baptist and Methodist churches, a manned fire department and city hall, a full time ambulance (after January 2007), walking tracks and a city cemetary that geneology fans will find fascinating-many members of some of Butts County's founding families are interred here. Currently there are around thirty businesses operating in the incorporated Jenkinsburg city area. Located only five miles from Tanger Outlet Center in Locust Grove and Interstate 75, Jenkinsburg is a convenient place to live for Atlanta commuters or those who just want to live in the country but be close to amenities. Those who grew up near a railroad will feel right at home as trains still come through over fifteen times a day. |
