IN MEMORY OF CARLTON WAYNE KING
CHIEF TAX APPRAISER (Ret)
October 28, 1941-December 17, 2007
Butts County lost a great man on December 17, 2007 with the passing of Wayne King, who served Butts County from February of 1983 until his official retirement in March of 2007. Wayne brought with him a love of his work in appraising that inspired others who would work with him down through the years. He was a tireless individual who would always work side by side with his staff to make sure the job got done, sometimes overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to ensure completion of whatever task was at hand. He earned the loyalty and love of his staff many times over through the years because he set a high standard of excellence for his department and then made sure that each individual in that department lived up to their potential. Through encouragement, humor and compassion, he set an example of a good and honest man who was charged with one of the most difficult jobs in the county government. His reputation was always one of unimpeachable integrity. His fellow department heads knew him as a respected colleage; his staff knew him as their friend and leader; his superiors knew him as equal to any task and they put their trust in his abilities to shepherd the tax appraisal process fairly and accurately. In memory of Wayne, his staff and other employees have shared their thoughts about him and what he meant to them. Their comments are reprinted below.

Wayne King was the respected elder of the county's management staff. Younger department heads often sought his sound and honest advice on a variety of subjects and sometimes his advice could cause you to laugh and sometimes it could sting but you knew he always meant it from his heart and that he was trying to show you that he cared about you and wanted you to succeed. He inspired us with his compassion, his humor and his razor sharp wit. You will be missed my friend and I'm honored that I can call you that.

I just lost my best friend and the community has lost a great man. Wayne never measured his success by monetary gain but by how much he could help someone else (I can't count that high). He taught me that honesty and compassion are the only ways to treat people. Wayne lived his life this way and I will miss him but
I know that I am a better person for having had the priviledge of knowing him. Love you, my friend.
Linton Snead, Chief Appraiser, Butts County Tax Assessors Office

To know Wayne King was an honor. To be his friend and colleage has truly been a blessing. Upon my expressing interest in the real estate and appraisal professions as a young man, Wayne offered advice and guidance that was invaluable. When he offered on many occasions to allow me to work with him, I readily accepted. his wisdom, kindness and generosity were unmatched. Wayne's professionalism and service to others will long be remembered. He was a great resource for the Development Authority, always available to to help in promotion of the county for new industry. The county has lost a great asset, and we have all lost a great friend.
